Established in 1980, to supply foam packaging
to the cosmetics industry, Holfeld Plastics Ltd has grown
to be a leading plastic Extrusion and Thermoforming company
both in the British Isles and continental Europe.
The company undertook a major development in
the late 1980’s when it moved to a purpose built Extrusion
and Vacuum forming facilities at Kilmacanogue, Co. Wicklow,
Ireland. Since that move the company has built three additional
factories on the same site covering in excess of 100,000 square
feet. Quality always a watchword at Holfeld Plastics Ltd,
was relentlessly followed during the expansion period and
resulted in the company being awarded ISO 9002 certification
in 1992.
Also, Product Authentication Inspectorate Ltd., certify that Holfeld Plastics Ltd complies with the requirements of the British Retail Consortium Technical Standard and Protocol for Companies supplying Retailer branded food products (Issue 3). In respect of Multi-layer extrusion and manufacture of thermoformed components for direct food contact (Category B) on the Schedule of Registration No 14319
Heavily involved in the poultry, meat, fish,
fruit, chilled produce and ready meal sectors, Holfeld’s
have risen to the challenges presented by this challenging
market sector. Holfeld invested in new materials better suited
to the emerging controlled atmospheric packaging (CAP) and
modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) packaging solutions.
The use of Gas flushing and heat sealing requirements of it’s
customers meant a review of manufacturing techniques to ensure
that both sheet and trays produced by the company would perform
adequately under these packaging methodologies.
Always with an adaptive and flexible attitude
to customer requirements the company has become proficient
with a number of materials including HIPS (Polystyrene), PP
(Polypropelyene), APET and BDS.

With the development of Ireland as a
major player in the telecommunication, electronic and
computer sectors in Europe, the company sought and achieved
penetration of these markets. To this end a World Class
Manufacturing environment was introduced into the company
in the 1990’s. Again, the company responded by
investing in Static Dissipitive material technology
for the computer and IT product ranges including tote
trays, testing containers and point of sale packaging.
Holfeld also inititated the development of innovative
clamshell and bespoke designs.

The company has a development team using a
DELCAM 3D modelling system, allowing them to explore new concepts
at minimal cost.
In line with it’s flexible attitude to
customer requirements the company has invested in it’s
own tooling facilities both at the Kilmacanogue site and in
Burton on Trent in the U.K. This allows quick design and prototypes
to be produced. The ability to adjust moulds allows for a
more effective transition process with changes in tray design.
