What is the Courtauld Commitment?
The Courtauld Commitment is a voluntary agreement between the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and major UK grocery organisations that supports less packaging. Signatories to Courtauld have committed to designing out packaging waste growth by 2008, to deliver absolute reductions in packaging waste by 2010, and to reduce the amount of food U.K. householders throw away by 155,000 tonnes by 2010, against a 2008 baseline.
Some 38 brands and retailers have already signed up to the 2005 Courtauld Commitment, and WRAP is continuing to engage with other firms to encourage them to take part. The final target for the Courtauld Commitment is in 2010, but WRAP are currently planning a second generation Courtauld going beyond 2010 with plans to include recycled content and carbon footprint of packaging.
