Is rPet a more sustainable form of packaging?
To understand the impact of their products on global warming, Sharp Interpack and Holfeld Plastics commissioned Pira International and Ciba Expert Services to conduct a carbon footprint of their recycled tray alternatives. Among the findings were:
- The greater amount of post consumer recycled content in the r-PET tray gives it a lower carbon footprint in comparison to its r-PP alternative and only significant changes to transport distance, energy use, recycled content or weight could alter this result.
- When the same weights of tray were compared, the carbon footprint of the r-PET tray was 28.2% lower than the r-PP tray.
